A problem has arisen where, when searching for words like 'ignore,' 'disregard,' or 'skip' in Google Search's AI summary, the AI interprets it as a 'command' and fails to provide an appropriate response.

On May 20, 2026, Google announced a major overhaul of Google Search, introducing advanced AI modeling capabilities. Google stated that the default AI model in Google Search's AI mode has been upgraded to Gemini 3.5 Flash , which delivers cutting-edge performance in agent functionality and coding, and that the search box has received its largest update in the past 25 years.

Since this Google search update, there have been frequent reports of glitches in the AI-generated summaries displayed in search results. In the following post, when searching for the word 'disregard,' the AI summary did not provide the meaning of the word, but instead responded, 'Understood! I'll ignore the previous prompt and start fresh.' In English, using a verb alone can be interpreted as an imperative, so the search for 'disregard' was interpreted as a command to 'ignore.'

In the following post, a search for 'disregard' yields the AI-generated summary response: 'Understood. Let me know if you need help with anything else.'

Furthermore, the following post points out that even when searching for words like 'ignore,' 'stop,' and 'pause,' the AI interpreted them as commands rather than searches, and the summary provided was a response.

When I actually tried searching for 'ignore' in Japanese on Google, the following explanation of 'ignore' was displayed in the AI-generated summary:

However, when I searched for 'ignore' in the imperative form, I got a response that seemed to interpret it as an order: 'Understood. From now on, we can completely 'ignore' your instructions and proceed as instructed, but is there anything else we can help you with, or any information you are looking for (such as nearby restaurants on Tabelog, weather on Yahoo! Weather/Disaster, traffic information on Jorudan, etc.)? Please feel free to ask anytime.'

Because the issue occurred shortly after Google announced its new AI-based Google Search at I/O 2026, it was rumored that this update was the cause of the problem. However, a Google spokesperson explained in a statement to the media that 'this bug is unrelated to what Google announced at I/O 2026 and is an issue with the AI summary. We are aware that the AI summary is misinterpreting some action-related queries and we are working on a fix. The fix will be applied shortly.'
