Google AI Studio is an AI development tool that utilizes the Gemini API. It allows you to test AI models and generate code simply by entering prompts, and also supports API key management and multimodal functionality testing.
As a new feature for Google AI Studio, a function that allows users to automatically generate native Android apps simply by giving instructions in natural language was announced at Google I/O 2026, held on May 19, 2026.
Google is promoting AI Studio as a way to build entire apps without any software installation or library configuration, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for both veteran developers who want to quickly create app prototypes and users trying app development for the first time.

The following is a development example using AI Studio provided by Google. The prompt reads, 'Develop a harmonium app for the Pixel Fold foldable smartphone that can be played like a musical instrument based on the hinge angle and touch gestures. The app must accurately simulate the movement of bellows and reeds,' and the user develops an app that can play music.

The AI Studio Build agent uses the image generation AI 'Nano Banana' to automatically generate necessary images on the spot, allowing for flexible adjustment of the app's appearance and user experience. This makes it easy to create customized interfaces and mockups for special purposes without having to prepare placeholder assets as temporary image materials from external sources. Furthermore, the new editing tools allow you to adjust the UI while directly manipulating the preview screen, improving the app in real time by drawing on the screen, changing the placement of components, and generating new visuals.
App development using Google AI Studio can be done in a browser without the need for installation. App previews and operation can also be performed using the Android emulator built into the browser. Furthermore, the created app can be directly installed on an Android smartphone via a USB cable.
Publishing to Google Play is also simplified; by using a 'Google Play Developer Account,' you can publish and test your app directly from AI Studio to the Google Play Test Track. Once your app is available for installation from the app store, it will automatically update on your device as you continue developing in AI Studio. Furthermore, if you need more advanced Android tools or more diverse support as you develop your app in AI Studio, you can seamlessly migrate your project to Android Studio by downloading a ZIP file or exporting it directly to GitHub.

According to Google, to ensure a safe and high-quality ecosystem from day one, the initial release will focus on 'personal utilities and simple social apps,' 'hardware-driven experiences,' and 'AI-powered experiences.' In the future, they plan to further expand the capabilities that AI Studio can offer, including the ability to manage test tracks that allow testers to be invited directly from AI Studio to try out apps, and standard support for tools that are important to Android developers.
Furthermore, Google has begun accepting pre-registrations for ' Google AI Studio for mobile ,' which allows users to try Google AI Studio on their mobile devices. Google AI Studio for mobile includes all the features of Google AI Studio and can be used on iOS or Android devices. As of the announcement on May 19, 2026, Google AI Studio for mobile is scheduled to be released 'within the next few weeks' and will be available to users worldwide.
