The agreement includes an option for SpaceX to either acquire Cursor for $60 billion (approximately 9.56 trillion yen) in the second half of 2026, or pay Cursor a $10 billion (approximately 1.6 trillion yen) compensation.
Cursor stated in a blog post, 'Six months ago, we released Composer as our first agent-based coding model. Since then, with Composer 1.5, we have scaled up reinforcement learning by more than 20 times. With the subsequent Composer 2, we added continuous pre-training, achieving state-of-the-art performance at a fraction of the cost of other models. We wanted to take model learning even further, but computational resources were a bottleneck. With this partnership, our team will leverage xAI's Colossus infrastructure to dramatically increase the intelligence of our models.'
Cursor CEO Michael Truell posted, 'We are thrilled to be partnering with the SpaceX team to scale up Composer.'

In December 2025, there were reports that SpaceX was planning an initial public offering (IPO). At the time, it was estimated that the IPO would bring SpaceX's valuation to approximately $1.5 trillion (approximately 239 trillion yen), but the acquisition of Cursor could further increase its valuation.
In February 2026, SpaceX acquired Elon Musk's AI company, xAI. Musk is promoting AI-related businesses at SpaceX and is planning to build AI data centers and AI chip factories in Earth orbit.

Cursor has also experienced rapid growth since its founding, with its company value increasing tenfold in just one year.
Regarding the partnership with Cursor, technology media outlet TechCrunch noted, 'It's no surprise to those closely following the industry. Last week, it was reported that xAI had begun leasing the computing power of its data centers to Cursor. Also last month, Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, Cursor's top engineering leaders, left the company to join xAI.'
