Seven countries already rely almost 100% of their electricity on renewable energy, potentially reaching an 'irreversible turning point' that will lead to the phase-out of fossil fuels.

Data released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that by 2026, seven countries will be supplied with almost all of their domestic electricity from renewable energy sources. Some scientists argue that renewable energy has reached an 'irreversible turning point' where it will replace conventional fossil fuel-based energy.

According to the data, Albania, Bhutan, Nepal, Paraguay, Iceland, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo get more than 99.7% of their electricity from geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that as of 2022, 40 countries, including 11 EU countries, were generating at least 50% of their domestic electricity from renewable energy technologies. It has also been reported that by January 2026, electricity supplied by wind and solar power within the EU will have surpassed that supplied by fossil fuels.

Professor Mark Jacobson of Stanford University, who published the data, said, 'We don't need any miraculous technology. We need to electrify everything and eliminate carbon dioxide emissions by supplying electricity through wind power, onshore wind power, solar power, concentrated solar power, geothermal power, small-scale hydropower, and large-scale hydropower.'

According to IEA data, in 2022, renewable energy accounted for 41.5% of the UK's domestic electricity consumption, a 10.5% increase from the previous year. In Scotland, renewable energy generation accounted for 113% of domestic electricity consumption in 2022.

In particular, regarding solar cells, technological innovations continue, with the efficiency of silicon alone being 26.1%, while tandem-type solar cells using perovskite technology reach 33.9%. It is predicted that solar power will become the global mainstream in the future.

A research team from the University of Exeter and University College London argues that solar energy has reached an 'irreversible turning point' and will become the world's primary energy source by 2050. They even go so far as to suggest that 'the technological trajectory initiated by past policies may have already passed the irreversible turning point in which solar energy gradually came to dominate the global electricity market, and further climate change measures may no longer be necessary.'
