The voice posting feature has been restored to X's direct messaging function. Voice posting is available in both one-on-one direct messages and group chats, and you can easily record voice memos by tapping the icon displayed to the right of the text box. You need to keep tapping the voice icon while recording, but you can continue recording even after releasing your finger by tapping and swiping upwards.

X aims to increase its competitiveness against other messaging apps by spinning off XChat as a standalone app, and just announced that it will provide a beta version of XChat to some users via TestFlight in March 2026. The distribution of the XChat beta via TestFlight was announced by Michael Boswell, product leader at xAI, on his X account.

Today we're opening it to the first 1,000 users on TestFlight.
Use it. Break it. We want your feedback.

XChat, now available as a standalone app, boasts that 'direct messages are end-to-end encrypted,' but security experts are warning that it is not very secure.
X owner Elon Musk had declared he would make X an all-purpose app, but X is planning to spin off its direct messaging function as XChat, so 'this move reflects a shift in X's strategy,' technology media outlet TechCrunch points out.
