On March 30, 2026, developer Munir Idrassi reported that the account he had used for signing Windows drivers and bootloaders for many years had been suspended by Microsoft, and that he was unable to release updates for the Windows version.

While updates for the Linux and macOS versions will continue, Idrassi notes that 'not being able to release a Windows version is a major blow to the project' because Windows is the platform used by the vast majority of users.

Microsoft sent no prior emails or warnings, offered no explanation, and even sent a message stating that he could not appeal. Idrassi said he tried to contact Microsoft in various ways, but only received automated responses or bot replies, and was unable to speak with a representative.

This report was shared on social media and picked up by the media, prompting Scott Hanselman, Microsoft's Vice President of Developer Communities, to address the issue and promise to take action.

Hanselman contacted Idrassi and introduced him to a Microsoft representative.

In a Hacker News thread discussing Idrassi's issue, the developer of the open-source VPN protocol ' WireGuard ' commented that he too was currently being shut down, and it appears Hanselman has also contacted this individual.

Microsoft has a history of similar incidents , including suspending the account of Mike Kagansky, the developer of the open-source office application LibreOffice.
