In the Artemis II mission, the Orion spacecraft was launched on April 2, 2026, Japan time . It entered the lunar gravitational field on April 6, and reached the point furthest from Earth in human history around 8:02 AM on April 7. The astronauts participating in Artemis II brought Nikon D5 SLR cameras and specially modified iPhone 17 Pro Max devices onto the spacecraft and took various photos during the mission.
The following photos were taken by astronauts aboard the Artemis II Orion spacecraft during a flyby of the moon, capturing a total solar eclipse in space. The sun is completely hidden behind the moon, and the faint light from the far side illuminates the moon's uneven surface and parts of the Orion spacecraft. The images below have been reduced in size for this article ; clicking on the photos will allow you to view the original data released by NASA.

This is a photograph of 'Earthset,' the moment when the Earth sinks below the surface of the Moon. The sight of our own planet sinking below the horizon of another planet is truly magical.

This photograph shows a tiny Earth far beyond the Moon. It clearly demonstrates that the Orion spacecraft has reached a location far from Earth.

Some of the photos even feature the crew of the Orion spacecraft.

The astronauts all appear to be wearing eclipse-watching glasses.

In addition, various photos taken during the Artemis II mission are also available.
