It has been reported that technology giant Oracle laid off 20,000 to 30,000 employees worldwide on March 31, 2026, local time. The employees were fired immediately with a single email sent early that morning local time, and there was no prior notice from the company.

Shortly after 6:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on March 31st, Oracle employees in the United States, Canada, India, Mexico, and other countries began receiving emails notifying them of their dismissal. It is estimated that 20,000 to 30,000 employees will be affected, potentially making this the largest workforce reduction in Oracle's history. As of May 2025, Oracle had 162,000 employees, meaning that nearly 18% of its total workforce has been laid off at once.

In this case, the employee received no prior notice from the HR department or discussion with their supervisor before being notified of their dismissal. They lost their job after receiving a single email early in the morning.

According to information posted on Reddit and the company's internal anonymous social network, Blind, the team most affected is said to be the 'Revenue and Health Sciences' division, which has seen at least a 30% reduction in staff. The SaaS and virtual operations services division has also seen more than 30% of its staff cut, including management-level employees.

Additionally, Oracle's Netsuit business application development center in India has also seen layoffs in multiple roles, including project management, individual contributors, and managers. It is reported that approximately 12,000 Oracle employees in India have been laid off.

On the overseas forum Reddit, the full text of the termination notice email sent by Oracle has been posted. The email reads: 'We have some unfortunate news regarding your position. After careful consideration of Oracle's current business needs, we have decided to eliminate your position as part of a broader organizational restructuring. Therefore, today is your last day of work.'

Employees were asked to provide a personal email address to facilitate their resignation process. The email also stated that access to company-issued computers, email, and files would soon be terminated.

It has been suggested that the phrases 'current business needs' and 'part of a broader organizational restructuring' in Oracle's termination notice email refer to the company's ongoing expansion of its AI data centers.

Analysts estimate that these layoffs will free up $8 billion to $10 billion (approximately 1.28 trillion to 1.6 trillion yen) in cash flow for Oracle. Oracle reportedly needs this cash to fund the construction of AI data centers.

In recent years, Oracle has deepened its ties with the AI industry, and it has been reported that in September 2025, it signed a $300 billion (approximately 44.2 trillion yen at the time) contract with OpenAI.

This employee reported that after receiving the email, they logged into their company PC and found that all their emails had disappeared except for a copy of the termination notice and an invitation to a Zoom meeting with HR at 10:00 AM. They were only able to send internal emails from their PC until 1:00 PM, but after that, they were logged out and completely unable to use their PC.
