TikTok claims that 'end-to-end (E2E) encryption is not implemented to protect user safety'

End-to-end (E2E) encryption, a technology that encrypts and decrypts data transmitted from a user's device, is used by several messaging apps as a privacy measure to prevent even law enforcement and service operators from viewing the contents of messages. TikTok's direct messaging feature does not support end-to-end encryption, but the app's operator reportedly explained that this was for the purpose of 'ensuring user safety.'

Text, images, and files exchanged via messaging apps are sent and received via the service provider's servers. End-to-end encryption works by encrypting data on the sender's device before sending it, storing it in encrypted form on the server, and decrypting it once it reaches the recipient. Only the recipient has the decryption key; the service provider does not have the key, so it is not possible to view the content of communications between users. Furthermore, even if the police or other authorities request disclosure of information from the service provider, they will not be able to obtain it, as they cannot view the content of the information without the decryption key.

As mentioned above, end-to-end encryption serves as a powerful means of protecting user privacy. However, only some services support end-to-end encryption, and TikTok's direct messages are not supported. TikTok is operated by the Chinese company ByteDance, and there are concerns that 'direct message conversations may be exposed to the Chinese government.'

Meanwhile, a representative from ByteDance's London office was reported to have explained to the BBC, 'With end-to-end encryption, our security team and police would not be able to read direct messages. We want to protect our young users from harm.' ByteDance also stated, 'Not implementing end-to-end encryption is a deliberate decision to differentiate from competing services,' claiming that not implementing end-to-end encryption gives it an advantage.

TikTok claims that it is not implementing end-to-end encryption to protect young people, but experts have pointed out that TikTok has designed its platform in a way that lures users to China, despite being aware of the negative health effects it could have on young people.
