Myrient, a website that offered downloads of Nintendo games, has announced that it will shut down on March 31, 2026, citing a lack of funding as the reason.

Myrient, a game archive built for the purpose of 'preserving video games,' announced on its official Telegram account that it was shutting down due to a lack of funding, malicious download managers, and rising prices for RAM, SSDs, and HDDs.

Myrient raises funds only through donations without advertising, but by 2025, despite the continued increase in traffic, donations remained flat and the site was paying more than $6,000 (about 940,000 yen) in maintenance costs out of its own pocket each month.

Additionally, the company said that with the prices of RAM, SSDs, and HDDs skyrocketing, it has no way to cover the cost of hosting over 390TB of games and the increased cost of hardware upgrades.



The site's operators also expressed dissatisfaction with malicious users who were monetizing Myrient's content, circumventing donation messages and the site's download protection features, and instead offering certain features for a fee. 'Such malicious and inappropriate use of the site will no longer be tolerated,' the site's operators said.

While these sites are considered to be infringing copyrights, they were apparently useful to some people because there are limited ways to obtain old Japanese games overseas. Some people have expressed dismay at the news of their closure.
