The news of the contract between xAI and the military was reported by the news site Axios, citing a statement from a Department of Defense official.

Until now, Anthropic's 'Claude' system has been used exclusively by the military for highly sensitive systems related to intelligence activities, weapons development, and operational deployments. It was reportedly used in the large-scale operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in January 2026.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has called for the military to 'use AI for all lawful purposes,' particularly prohibiting uses that could lead to mass surveillance of Americans or the development of fully autonomous weapons, creating friction with the Department of Defense.

Most recently, the Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a 'supply chain risk,' potentially barring it from doing business with military contractors.

xAI has agreed to the military's request for 'all lawful uses of AI,' and Google, which owns Gemini, is also close to concluding a contract with the military.

According to the New York Times, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Tuesday, February 24th, and is preparing to ask Anthropic for concessions based on its contracts with xAI and Google.

However, those involved acknowledge that just because a contract has been signed with xAI does not mean that separating and replacing Claude will be easy, and some experts have said that 'separating Claude would be counterproductive.'

By the way, OpenAI, one of the four major AI companies, is taking the stance that it needs to first work on safety technology, and it seems that it is far from reaching an agreement with the Department of Defense.
