Why is Google's image-generating AI called 'Nano Banana'?

'Nano Banana,' an image-generating AI announced by Google in August 2025, was originally called 'Gemini 2.5 Flash Image,' but its nickname is better known. When 'Gemini 3 Pro Image' was announced in November 2025, Google itself began to use the nickname 'Nano Banana Pro.' Google itself has explained what the name 'Nano Banana' actually means.

Since it comes from a code name, it should originally have been a name specific to the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, but the name 'Nano Banana Pro' was promoted for the 'Gemini 3 Pro Image' announced in November 2025.

As mentioned above, the name 'Nano Banana' comes from a code name, but according to product manager Naina Reishani and others, it was not used during development but was decided in late July 2025.

According to Leishani, as the release of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image approached, the development team was considering registering with LMArena , a benchmarking and testing platform. LMArena is a platform that allows large-scale language models and image generation models to compete against each other while keeping their identities private, and registration required a public name. Late at night, Leishani's manager messaged him, saying, 'Isn't it about time to register?' to which he replied, 'Okay. How about a fun name like 'Nano Banana'?' The OK was given, and the name 'Nano Banana' was decided upon.

The name doesn't have any particular meaning; some of her friends called her 'Naina Banana,' while others called her 'Nano' because she's short and loves computers, so she combined the two nicknames and stuck with it.

Regarding the popularity of the 'Nano Banana' after its public release, Reishani said, 'People responded really well. Everyone was impressed with the finished product, and they thought the name was funny, so it became a hot topic.'
