WHILM is a movie recommendation service that recommends movies that fit your current mood by answering five questions.

Many people have probably had the experience of wanting to watch a movie, only to find that it wasn't a popular hit or a recommendation from someone else, and not being able to enjoy it very much because it didn't fit their current mood. However, there's also the fear that if you gather too much information, you might get spoiled and not be able to enjoy the movie at all. WHILM , a movie recommendation app created by film-loving engineer

Tanamoto , asks you to answer five simple questions and it recommends movies that fit your current mood without revealing any spoilers.

Rather than just finding a good movie, I want to find a movie that suits me right now ── How I created a mood-based movie recommendation app #MachineLearning - Qiita

WHILM can be used for free from your browser. Once you access the site, click 'Start Movie Diagnosis.'

The first question asked me was, 'What emotions and experiences do you want when you watch a movie?' I chose the one that best suited my mood from the four options. This time, I clicked 'Thrilling action.'

When asked, 'What is the ideal viewing environment and atmosphere when watching an action movie?', the answer was, 'I want to enjoy it on a big screen for a full-on experience.'

The third question was, 'When choosing an action movie, what factors do you pay the most attention to?' Since I was in the mood for thrills and excitement, I clicked 'Impressive stunts and special effects.'

When asked, 'How do you want to feel when watching an action movie?', select 'I want to feel excited and have an adrenaline rush.'

The final question was, 'When watching an action movie, what elements do you think would make it more enjoyable?' Click on 'A unique setting or worldview.'

After you have finished answering the five questions, the message 'Analyzing your mood...' will appear and you will be asked to wait for 1-2 minutes.

As 'Movies recommended for you,' 18 movies that matched the mood you answered were recommended.

Clicking on a movie package will display the synopsis and the reason for its recommendation. You can also add it to your 'favorites' by clicking the heart button, so you can keep track of movies you want to watch later.

To see your favorite works, return to the top of WHILM and click the heart button.

The works you have registered as favorites will be displayed in a list. You can narrow down the list of favorites by genre or era, and sort them by date added or title.

If you can't find the movie you want to watch among the 18 recommended movies, click 'See other movies.'

You can receive other recommendations by submitting an additional request. Since the 18 recommended titles this time seemed to be mostly well-known and popular works, I selected 'More niche works' and clicked 'View new recommendations.'

18 new films were recommended.

Also, when I accessed WHILM again and answered the questions from the beginning, the questions were different from the first time. Even if I thought I answered the same questions, the recommended films would be different each time, so even people with strong preferences would be recommended different films each time they used the app.

According to Tanamoto, who created WHILM, even movie lovers often find it surprisingly difficult to find a movie they want to watch. He felt frustrated when they spent a lot of time choosing a movie only to find that it just didn't appeal to them. Since enjoying a movie isn't just about personal preference, but also about your current mood, Tanamoto created WHILM as a system to find movies that fit your current mood. ChatGPT generates the questions and recommends movies, while information such as movie summaries and posters is obtained from the TMDb movie database.
