DRM-free books on Amazon Kindle can now be offered in EPUB and PDF formats

On Kindle, readers can download content in EPUB and PDF formats if the publisher has applied the 'Digital Rights Management (DRM) Free' setting to the content.
Introducing new eBook download options (starting in 2026)

Digital Rights Management
Starting January 20, 2026, DRM-free Kindle content will be freely downloadable by readers in EPUB or PDF format, allowing them to use the content outside of the Kindle app or device.
Content previously distributed as DRM-free will not be enabled for EPUB and PDF downloads unless explicitly configured by the publisher, and the DRM setting will not be changed automatically.
DRM settings can be freely set by content distributors. It is possible to turn off DRM once and then turn it on later, but in this case, readers who downloaded content during the DRM-off period will be able to access the downloaded content even after the DRM is turned on.
Starting December 9, 2025, you can configure DRM settings from the KDP 'Bookshelf' page. If you are configuring DRM settings for content that has already been distributed, first log in to KDP and access the 'Edit eBook Content' page from the 'Bookshelf.'

Change the DRM settings and complete the publishing process. Please note that it may take up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect.

Here's a list of what readers can do with and without DRM:

Please note that DRM settings must be updated individually for each piece of content and cannot be updated all at once at the time of writing.
