Anime production company 'Gainax' has disappeared, and works and results will be transferred to the rights holders and creators

Hideaki Anno, a former member of Gainax and CEO of the animation production company Khara, reported that Gainax, an animation production company that went

bankrupt in June 2024 , ceased to exist as a corporation in December 2025.

Gainax was founded in 1984 and is widely known for producing the TV anime series 'Neon Genesis Evangelion,' which aired from 1995 to 1996. However, the rights to this work, as well as those for the later films 'Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone' through 'Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,' are owned by Khara.

For this reason, when the then-president was arrested in 2019 for indecent acts against a minor, Khara protested against the name 'Eva' appearing in reports of the incident.

In 2020, Gainax appointed Yasuhiro Kamimura, an old friend of Anno's from Groundworks, which handles copyright management for 'Evangelion,' as its new president. The two worked closely with Khara to manage intellectual property and protect rights, but in 2024, after a lawsuit was filed by a debt collection agency, the company abandoned its restructuring efforts and decided to file for bankruptcy. The Tokyo District Court accepted the petition, and the company was declared bankrupt.

Anno reported that he had now completed the management of the intellectual property held by Gainax, saying, 'Thanks to everyone's cooperation, we were able to go through the proper procedures for the rights processing and transfer of each work, as well as the transfer of various materials such as production results, and return them safely to the respective rights holders and creators.'

Although Khara provided the largest amount of support to Gainax, it has been pointed out that Gainax was dishonest about repayments and that the previous management team lacked respect for the company, its works, and its staff.

Gainax has been working on a project called 'Uru from Blue' since Anno was still with the company, and after plans for production were canceled in 1992, they announced in 2013 that they were restarting the project after 20 years, but it may never be released to the public after all.
