Apple has announced that satellite messaging will be available in Japan for iPhone 14 and later and Apple Watch Ultra 3. iPhones must be running iOS 18 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra 3 must be running watchOS 26 or later.
Satellite messaging is available when users are out of cellular or Wi-Fi range.
When users try to send a message outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, satellite-based messaging automatically prompts them to connect to the nearest satellite. They can instantly connect to a satellite from their iPhone lock screen, Apple Watch screen, or the Messages app. Once connected, users can send and receive text, emojis, and Tapbacks via iMessage and SMS. iMessages sent via satellite have built-in privacy and are end-to-end encrypted.

When you send a message via satellite, you will be notified repeatedly that you are sending a message via satellite, such as 'Via satellite,' 'Connected only via satellite,' or 'Sent via satellite.'
For Apple Watch Ultra 3:
Some watch faces will display a message on the screen indicating that you are connected to satellite communications.
Users can also get a detailed look at how to connect to satellites on their iPhone or Apple Watch with a built-in satellite demo. On supported models, Dynamic Island will display the strength of the satellite connection and prompt the user to look left or right if the connection can be improved.
Satellite messaging joins the satellite Emergency SOS and satellite Find Me features already available in Japan.
