ChatGPT shows signs of ad adoption, internal testing found



The beta code for ChatGPT's Android app shows evidence that OpenAI is conducting internal testing to display ads on ChatGPT, potentially inserting ads into web search results.

According to engineer Tibor Vlaho, the ad-related strings, such as 'bazaar content,' 'search ad,' and 'search ads carousel,' were found in ChatGPT's Android app version 1.2025.329 beta.



At the time of writing, it's unclear how the ads will be implemented, but Bleeping Computer, a computer security news site, says, 'They could create personalized ads promoting products users actually want to buy, or they could sneak ads into search results, like Google's search ads.'

OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, said in December 2024 that the company was considering introducing advertising as a new revenue generation method. However, at this stage, she said, 'We will carefully consider when and where to introduce it,' but did not disclose the specific timing or method.

In a speech at Harvard University in October 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was asked whether the company would pursue an advertising revenue strategy. He said, 'Advertising monetization is a last resort for us. I'm not saying that OpenAI will never consider advertising, but I don't like advertising in general, and advertising plus AI is something that I find particularly unsettling.'

However, in an interview with Stratechery, a technology media outlet, published in October 2025, Altman commented on the potential of advertising in OpenAI's business development, saying, 'I believe we can create a great advertising product that will be of real benefit to users and will be beneficial to our relationship with them.' However, he also said, 'I don't know what that specifically is yet. I'm not yet at the stage where I can present it as 'this is our advertising model.''

As of October 2025 , ChatGPT is expected to have approximately 72 million daily active users. Bleeping Computer stated, 'ChatGPT has everything you need to successfully advertise,' and pointed out that the introduction of advertising to ChatGPT could redefine the web economy.
