The visual released is a fantastical one, showing Hachiware, Chiikawa, and Usagi bathed in moonlight on a small boat.

The original author, Nagano, will also be writing the script. He sent us the following message with an illustration:

Chiikawa has been decided to be made into a movie!!
The title is 'The Secret of Mermaid Island'
This is a story about going to an island that I posted on X from March to November 2023.
Chiikawa and friends' journey on the big screen for the first time
We hope you'll look forward to it!!

At the end of the comment, there was also a message from the island's resident duo: 'MATA' and 'AERUNE!!'

'Chiikawa' is a manga series that Nagano has been posting on X (formerly Twitter). The characters themselves have been drawn since around 2017.

In January 2020, a separate account for 'Chiikawa' was launched, separate from Nagano's account. Initially, single illustrations and series of illustrations were posted, but from late January, she also began posting manga-style illustrations with clearly defined panels.

Starting in 2022, the series will be made into a TV anime series, with animation produced by Doga Kobo, and will be broadcast on Mezamashi TV.

The episodes that will be made into films are those posted as part of a long-running series that will run from March to November 2023. Chiikawa has a variety of episodes, from one-offs to mid-length stories, but they were not individually titled when posted, and Nagano described them as 'a story about going to an island.'

The eighth volume of the 'Chiikawa' manga, published on Friday, November 21st, compiles these episodes into one book, and is described in the announcement as 'The Story of the Island.'

On Toho Movie Information's X account, it is referred to by one of its nicknames, 'The Siren Arc.'

The original story is a very 'Nagano-flavored' episode, so it will be interesting to see what Nagano himself will add or subtract as he writes the script.
