The businessman Epstein was arrested, indicted, and convicted on charges of soliciting women, including minors. Because he had extensive ties with celebrities, people who were close to Epstein are suspected of being involved in prostitution, and multiple investigations have been conducted.

On November 12, 2025, the House Oversight Committee released more than 20,000 documents related to Epstein, revealing hundreds of messages exchanged between Summers and Epstein.

The messages, which span at least seven years, are known to have been exchanged up until shortly before Epstein's arrest. Summers had consulted Epstein about romantic relationships with women and sought his advice on a charitable project related to Summers' wife. Epstein also had financial ties with Epstein, donating $110,000 (approximately 17 million yen) to an organization supporting Summers' wife. However, Summers never mentioned Epstein's sexual crimes.

Following the publication of the documents, Summers issued a statement saying, 'I am deeply ashamed of my actions and take full responsibility for my poor decision to continue communicating with Epstein,' and announced that he would resign from OpenAI's board of directors.

OpenAI said it 'thanks him for his significant contributions and the perspective he brings to the board.'

Summers will continue to teach at Harvard University.

The documents also name other prominent Harvard faculty, including Harvard Law School Professor Emeritus Alan M. Dershowitz and Summers' wife, English Professor Emeritus Elisa F. New. Harvard will launch a new investigation into ties between university officials and Epstein.
