Zoox is a robotaxi company founded in 2014 and has been a subsidiary of Amazon since 2020. While Waymo and other well-known robotaxi operators are known for their autonomous driving, Zoox is unique in that it does not use repurposed existing cars, but instead uses completely new vehicles designed specifically for autonomous driving.

San Francisco, along with Las Vegas, was one of the areas where Zoox was conducting testing, and when the service began in Las Vegas, it was announced that 'San Francisco will be next.' The first test, called the 'Zoox Explorer Program,' will gather feedback before expanding the service. The service is free to use, and users can join the waiting list by registering through the app. Anyone can join the program and use Zoox by installing the app.

The test will cover areas including the SoMa (South of Market) district, home to the San Francisco Giants' home stadium, AT&T Park, the historic Mission District, and much of the Design District, home to luxury shops and offices. The ride will be available anywhere within the area.

'Zoox has been testing its autonomous driving technology in San Francisco since 2017. San Francisco is our home, a city of innovation and progress. It has an incredible transportation system that Zoox truly complements,' said Zoox CEO Aisha Evans. 'We've seen great interest in Zoox and are excited to take this first step in bringing our dedicated robotaxi experience to more people.'

Testing is also expected to begin soon in Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida.
