Tesla has announced a recall of some Powerwall 2 vehicles in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Tesla explains the recall is due to a 'defective third-party battery cell.' Some of the affected Powerwall 2 vehicles may malfunction, overheat, smoke, or catch fire, and may cause minor physical damage.

Tesla explained, 'This issue is limited to a specific group of Powerwall 2 customers and does not affect Powerwall 3. All affected units will be replaced at no cost to customers.' Tesla also recalled Powerwall 2 batteries in Australia in September 2024.

Tesla said that nearly all of the affected Powerwall 2s have been remotely de-energized and are now considered safe. Tesla technicians are manually de-energizing some Powerwall 2s that could not be remotely de-energized.

The recall includes approximately 10,500 Powerwall 2s sold on the Tesla website and through authorized Tesla installers in the United States between November 2020 and December 2022. The affected Powerwall 2s appear to be identifiable by the model number printed on the side.

Tesla is removing and replacing all affected Powerwall 2s at no additional cost and is notifying customers through its mobile app. Replacements are being prioritized, and certified installers are 'contacting customers directly via email or phone' to schedule installation.
