Samsung has led the foldable smartphone market since announcing the world's first foldable smartphone in 2019. In August 2025, it released the Galaxy Z Fold7, which folds horizontally, and the Galaxy Z Flip7, which folds vertically.

However, the Chosun Ilbo points out that in recent years, Samsung has lost its lead in the foldable smartphone market due to aggressive sales strategies by Chinese companies. In fact, according to survey data from market research firm Canalys , Samsung is expected to secure a 20% share of the foldable smartphone market in the first half of 2025, far behind Huawei's 48%. Samsung is reportedly planning to release a tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, in order to regain its lead in the foldable smartphone market.
According to reports, Samsung has internally decided to release the Galaxy Z TriFold on December 5th, and is making final preparations, including a launch event. Regarding the Galaxy Z TriFold, Roh Tae-moon, acting president of Samsung's Device eXperience (DX) division, said in July 2025 that the company expects a release this year. However, some industry insiders have expressed the view that a release this year would be difficult.
The Galaxy Z TriFold has three displays connected side by side, with the left and right displays folded inward, and the rear display and rear camera are located behind the central display.
The rear display is 6.5 inches in size, which is roughly the same as the Galaxy Z Fold7. Meanwhile, the main display becomes a large 10-inch screen when unfolded. The battery capacity is 5600mAh.
When unfolded, it's 4.2mm thin, the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. When folded, it's 14mm thin, which is thinner than the original Galaxy Fold when folded.

As previously reported , the Galaxy Z TriFold was first exhibited at the APEC Summit held at the end of October 2025. Below is a photo of the Galaxy Z TriFold on display.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is reportedly priced at $3,000 (approximately ¥464,000), with initial shipments estimated at around 20,000 to 30,000 units. Samsung's strategy is not to increase profits through sales volume, but rather to demonstrate its technological capabilities and innovation to the public through ultra-premium products. Sales will be limited to Korea and certain parts of Asia, and the device will be sold as a SIM-free device without any partnerships with telecommunications carriers.
Meanwhile, Evan Blass, a well-known and reliable smartphone leaker, has revealed that the Galaxy Z TriFold will have a 6.5-inch external display and a 10-inch internal display when unfolded, with peak brightness of 2600 nits and 1600 nits, respectively, thicknesses of 3.9mm, 4.0mm, and 4.2mm, respectively, a 200-megapixel main camera, and a 5437mAh battery capacity.

An anonymous industry source told the Chosun Ilbo, 'Samsung doesn't appear to have set ambitious sales targets. Its main goal is to demonstrate its technological leadership and gauge market reaction using the highly refined Galaxy Z Trifold form factor.'
Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to compete with Huawei's Mate XT, the world's first tri-fold smartphone. Furthermore, Huawei has just announced its next-generation model, the Mate XTs, in September 2025. The Mate XTs will be priced at 15,000 yuan (approximately 326,000 yen) and will fold differently from the Galaxy Z TriFold.
