Amazon's Project Kuiper, which aims to cover the Earth in three layers with more than 3,000 satellites and provide satellite-based broadband communications to 95% of humanity, was launched around 2018. The existence of the plan became clear in 2019 when a company called 'Kuiper Systems LLC' sought approval for its satellite launch plan.

'We started small, with a handful of engineers and some blueprints on paper. Like many early Amazon projects, the program needed a code name, and the team began working under the name 'Project Kuiper,' after the Kuiper Belt , a group of asteroids in the outer solar system,' Amazon said.
The 'Leo' in the new name, Amazon Leo, comes from the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in which Amazon's satellites orbit at an altitude of less than 2,000 km. At the time of writing, Amazon has already launched approximately 153 satellites into this low Earth orbit, and aims to launch approximately 3,000 satellites in the future.

The first satellite launch in April 2025 can be seen below.
The Amazon Leo official website announced three types of antennas for connecting to the Amazon Leo satellite network: Amazon Leo Nano, Amazon Leo Pro, and Amazon Leo Ultra. All of them have almost the same design and size as the ones announced in 2023 .
The three types of antennas differ in size and communication bandwidth, with the smallest Amazon Leo Nano being 7 inches (about 17.78 cm) x 7 inches and up to 100 Mbps, the Amazon Leo Pro being 11 inches (about 27.94 cm) x 11 inches and up to 400 Mbps, and the largest Amazon Leo Ultra being 20 inches (about 50.8 cm) x 30 inches (76.2 cm) and up to 1 Gbps.

While SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is already available globally, Amazon will now be competing in the market. While pricing and details of the service were not disclosed at the time of writing, Amazon stated that 'customers and partners such as JetBlue, L3Harris, DIRECTV Latin America, Sky Brasil, and Australia's national broadband network operator, NBN Co., have already signed up to deploy the service.'
