A newspaper accidentally published the AI output as is

In recent years, generative AI has been used in a variety of businesses, but if there is clear evidence that generative AI was used in the deliverables, there is a risk of embarrassment and loss of trust. A recent case has been making the headlines after the output of an AI was published verbatim in Pakistan's largest English-language newspaper,

On November 12, 2025, Pakistani journalist Omar R Quraishi (@omar_quraishi) posted an image to X saying, 'I know journalists use AI in their work, but this is a bit too much! The editor of DAWN's economics page should have at least edited the last paragraph!'
The DAWN article in question is shown below. The part framed in red reads, 'If you want, I can also create an even sunappier 'front-page style' version with punchy one-line stats and a bold, infographic-ready layout — perfect for maximum reader impact. Do you want me to do that next?' This shows that the output of the AI was published as is.

In a reply to this post, another user posted the same newspaper page that contained the output of the generative AI.

The online version of the article has already been corrected, but a message from the editorial department is included at the end.

The message read, 'This article published in today's DAWN was originally edited using AI, which violates our current AI policy, which is posted on our website and can be viewed here . The original article also contained AI-generated text during the editing process, which has been removed from the digital version. We are currently investigating this matter and regret any violation of our AI policy.'

When I checked DAWN's AI policy, I found that one of the prohibited activities was 'Using AI to generate or edit news stories.'

The matter has also become a hot topic on the social news site Hacker News.

One user reported , 'The same thing happened with the German magazine Spiegel. See the correction at the end of this article.' Checking the actual article , we found a message that read, 'A previous version of this article contained a warning from an AI tool due to a production error. We sometimes use AI tools to check our own writing. Contrary to our standards, this article was published before it had been thoroughly proofread by a human. We have fixed this issue and removed the warning from the AI tool.'

Other comments included, 'There have been cases in scientific papers where the output of AI has been reproduced verbatim,' and 'The article in question was boring, full of statistical data, so it's understandable that people would not want to write such a tedious article .'
