Apple's definition of a 'mini app' is a self-contained app built using web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript. It has been supported since 2017 in the design section of the App Review Guidelines, which outlines the guidelines that must be followed for apps to be distributed on the App Store.

Until now, there have been no special preferential treatments for mini-apps, but the Mini Apps Partner Program will reduce the commission on charges incurred within the app from 30% for regular apps to 15%.

Not all mini-apps are eligible; in addition to the obvious requirements of the main app that forms the basis of the mini-app, such as being available for iOS or iPadOS and being hosted on the App Store, mini-apps must also meet certain other conditions, such as supporting the Declared Age Rating API and Advanced Commerce API, which ensure that content is appropriate for the user's age, and using Apple's in-app payment system to send information about users' in-app purchases to Apple when a refund is requested.

Developers who wish to receive fee discounts through the Mini Apps Partner Program must meet the relevant requirements and apply to join the program.
