In November 2025, the song 'Walk My Walk' by the artist Breaking Rust reached number one on Billboard's Country Digital Song Sales chart.

Breaking Rust is a fictitious artist. Despite being generated by AI, 'Walk My Walk' has gained considerable popularity, with over 3 million plays on Spotify . Other Breaking Rust songs have also been played hundreds of thousands of times.

Breaking Rust's Instagram page simply describes it as 'outlaw country' and 'soul music for us,' making no mention that the music is entirely created by machines.

Whiskey Riff, a media outlet that covers country music, reported, 'Breaking Rust has gained over 30,000 followers since launching its Instagram account on October 15, 2025, but many of the comments on its posts appear to be from bots. Additionally, its monthly Spotify listenership has reached 1.8 million, while Colby Acuff, a human artist who pours his soul into his work, has just over 1 million monthly listeners. Even Charlie Crockett, who releases new music at a breakneck pace that even a computer can't keep up with, only has 1.4 million monthly listeners. Somehow, this shoddy AI-generated music has more listeners than both of them. It's infuriating.'

Billboard has recognized Breaking Rust as an 'AI-powered band' and has given permission for AI-generated music to appear on its charts.

Because generative AI is trained using existing music, several groups have emerged to oppose the 'unauthorized use of creative works.'

Whiskey Riff points out, 'Yes, I understand that computers have been involved in music production for a long time. Take EDM for example, and there's no denying the fact that EDM artists put a lot of effort into it. But AI songs are just something a computer spits out. The problem is that these AI-generated songs are taking attention and revenue away from real songwriters and artists.'
