French authorities warn SHEIN after child-like sex dolls are sold at the brand

After it was discovered that the Chinese discount shopping website SHEIN was selling sex dolls (sex wives) in the shape of children, the French consumer protection authority issued a warning to SHEIN and referred the matter to prosecutors. SHEIN has reportedly removed all sex doll listings in response.

The sex dolls sold by SHEIN were child-like dolls, some of which had explicit sexual descriptions.

The French consumer protection authority pointed out that 'the description and classification on the site make it highly likely that the content in question constitutes child pornography,' and issued a formal notice to SHEIN demanding corrective measures, citing a law that states, 'In cases related to terrorism, drug trafficking, and child pornography, the government has the right to request that the relevant parties be barred from accessing the French market.'

The law gives authorities the power to order the removal of clearly illegal content, such as child pornography, within 24 hours. If platforms do not comply, authorities can ask internet service providers and search engines to block access to the platforms and remove them from their lists.

In addition, the consumer protection authority added, 'Various pornographic content, including sex dolls with an adult atmosphere, is also distributed. SHEIN has no filtering measures to prevent minors and vulnerable people from accessing this pornographic content. Due to this lack of measures, the law could result in a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine of 75,000 euros (approximately 13 million yen).'

SHEIN said it had complied with the order and removed all sex dolls from its platform, and that it was reviewing its screening process for adult products, adding that it would investigate how these products had evaded screening.

'SHEIN has no tolerance for child exploitation. The products identified were listed by a third-party seller. Trust is the foundation of our business, and we will not tolerate anything that violates that trust,' said Donald Tang, Chairman of SHEIN.

This incident sparked further backlash, as it occurred just before the world's first SHEIN brick-and-mortar store was scheduled to open in France. SHEIN brick-and-mortar stores have already been criticized for promoting the 'fast fashion' culture in France, the mecca of fashion. Major independent French fashion brands have even removed their products from large stores SHEIN is opening in protest. The sex doll sales incident, combined with this criticism, has reportedly intensified the controversy.
