Threads introduces 'ghost posts' that disappear after 24 hours

Meta's social networking site 'Threads' has added 'ghost posts, ' which automatically disappear from your feed after 24 hours. Ghost posts are distinguished from regular posts by a dotted line in the post bubble, and do not appear in the regular post list.
Introducing Disappearing Posts on Threads
Threads has revealed that it will be testing a feature for a limited number of users starting around August 2024 that will delete posts and all replies 24 hours after they are posted. This feature, which can be considered a Threads version of Instagram's 'Stories,' operated by Meta, will add a 24-hour timer to posts, and once the deadline has passed, the post and any replies to the post will be automatically deleted. A Meta spokesperson said, 'This is a new, casual way to share on Threads.'
Threads is testing posts that disappear after 24 hours - GIGAZINE

The feature that automatically disappears after 24 hours was officially implemented on October 27, 2025, under the name 'Ghost Posts.' Unlike the test, replies to ghost posts are sent to the message inbox and cannot be seen by others. Also, only the poster can see who has liked and replied to the post.
To post as a ghost, simply turn on the 'ghost icon' when posting.

Ghost posts are displayed with a dotted bubble, making them easy to distinguish from regular posts.

When I checked with GIGAZINE's Threads account, I found that the ghost icon was not displayed when creating an article, either in the browser version or the smartphone app, and ghost posting was not possible. The feature is expected to be gradually released to users.
However, users were still able to view ghost posts, and a 'Ghost Posts' category was added to the feed.

You can only display ghost posts in your feed.

Ghost posts don't have the 'Reply,' 'Repost,' or 'Message' icons found in regular posts, but instead have a 'Like' and 'Email' icon, along with a time limit for how long the ghost post will remain visible before disappearing.

Ghost posts also don't appear in the profile page list, and if there are any public ghost posts, they're displayed as 'Ghost Post' in the thread list. Tap 'Ghost Post.'

You can see a list of ghost posts for your account.

Meta said, 'Ghost posting is just one of the many tools you can use to express yourself and join the conversation on Threads. We'll continue to update Threads to make it easier and more fun to share your thoughts and connect with others.'
