A major AWS outage causes smart beds to overheat and become unable to return to their original position

The massive AWS outage that occurred on October 20, 2025 (Japan time) is said to have caused economic losses of tens of trillions of yen . Amid this chaos, Eight Sleep , a provider of luxury smart beds, experienced issues such as beds that could not be adjusted back to their original position and mattresses becoming too hot, leading to the company adding a 'blackout mode' that does not rely on cloud networks.

The AWS issue that occurred on October 20, 2025, was so large that it generated 8 million reports to the outage detection service DownDetector. Eight Sleep's smart bed system uses AWS for temperature control and biometric data tracking. When AWS went down, the company first lost access to the app that manages the water-cooling coils, and ultimately was unable to change any settings that were still active.
This caused problems such as users being unable to return the bed to its original tilt or the mattress becoming fixed at a temperature higher than room temperature.
After becoming aware of the problem, Eight Sleep worked around the clock to address it, incorporating a 'blackout mode' into the app that allows users to turn features on and off and change settings such as temperature and tilt without using the cloud.
Reddit user erkusoperc, who encountered problems with an Eight Sleep smart bed, said he woke up in the middle of the night because he was too hot and fiddled with the remote to turn down the temperature. 'In the morning, I realized why there was no haptic feedback,' he wrote. 'I would understand if Eight Sleep's backend was down and the automatic controls weren't working, but the fact that you can't adjust the temperature locally is ridiculous. It's completely unacceptable for such an expensive product (starting at $2,000, or about 300,000 yen).'
