Amazon announces two new robot systems, 'Blue Jay' and 'Project Eluna,' and Amazon claims it 'will not take away jobs'

Amazon has announced new robotics and AI technologies for its operations, including ' Blue Jay ,' which uses multiple robotic arms in coordination to handle packages, and ' Project Eluna ,' which uses AI to allocate work and resolve problems within facilities. While prior reports had said

Amazon has over 300 locations around the world, where it uses robots to deliver and manage products. It was revealed that in July 2025, the total number of robots deployed at Amazon's locations had reached 1 million. In addition to the tactile warehouse robot ' Vulcan ,' Amazon also uses 'DeepFleet,' a generative AI-based model originally developed as a traffic management system, to operate large numbers of robots smartly and efficiently. This model adjusts and optimizes the movements of robots operating within Amazon's fulfillment centers .

Building on technologies announced in 2025, such as Vulcan and DeepFleet, Amazon announced two new systems, 'Blue Jay' and 'Project Eluna,' on October 23, 2025, that use AI to support the real world.
Blue Jay
Blue Jay is a next-generation robot system that coordinates multiple robotic arms to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Previously, processes such as 'picking,' 'stowing,' and 'consolidation' were performed at three separate robotic stations, but now, a single robot can perform them all in one continuous operation. Blue Jay is comprised of multiple robotic arms, and once it recognizes the product using AI, it selects the optimal arm and operation based on the product's shape, size, and packaging material.

Blue Jay streamlines operations, allowing frontline employees to work more efficiently in less physical space. Amazon says that Blue Jay alone can automate 75% of previously manual handling of goods.
By utilizing a digital twin (virtual environment) to create dozens of prototypes, Blue Jay was able to go from concept to production in just over a year, less than half the time of other projects. Blue Jay is currently undergoing operational testing at one of Amazon's facilities in South Carolina, and is expected to become a core technology supporting Amazon's same-day delivery in the future.
・Project Eluna

Project Eluna will be piloted at a fulfillment center in Tennessee during the 2025 holiday season.
Prior to Amazon's announcement, The New York Times reported that 'Amazon plans to expand robotic automation and replace 500,000 employees with robots.' According to the report, an Amazon executive said at a board meeting, 'We expect product sales to double by 2033, but the introduction of robots will allow us to maintain the same headcount for the next few years.'

In response to this report, Amazon issued a statement saying, 'The documents viewed by The New York Times are incomplete and do not represent Amazon's overall hiring strategy,' and 'Amazon plans to hire 250,000 people for the upcoming holiday season.' Also, when announcing Blue Jay and Project Eluna, the company said, 'New technology is how AI that learns from the physical world improves the workplace and enhances the employee experience,' and emphasized that 'No other company has created more jobs than Amazon over the past decade,' highlighting the company's aggressive hiring efforts across the United States.
'Amazon's latest innovations leverage AI and robotics to deliver even better experiences for employees and customers,' said Ty Brady, chief technologist at Amazon Robotics. 'Our goal is to make technology the most practical and powerful tool possible. Work will be safer, smarter, and more rewarding. But the real headlines aren't about robots; they're about people and the future of work we're building together.'
Blue Jay and Project Eluna are part of Amazon Robotics' 'Agentic AI' initiative, which is a system in which AI understands real-world physical tasks and makes decisions and takes action on its own.
