Amazon announces AI smart glasses for delivery drivers, automating package scanning and delivery completion procedures by projecting navigation to delivery destinations onto the lenses

Amazon has announced that it has developed AI-powered smart glasses for delivery drivers that can scan packages, provide route guidance, and obtain delivery receipts. Amazon is currently testing the glasses with delivery drivers in the US and Canada, and plans to refine the technology before rolling it out more widely.

The primary purpose of smart glasses for delivery drivers is to provide a hands-free experience for drivers, reducing the need for drivers to constantly look back and forth between their phone, package and surroundings, improving safety and creating a seamless delivery experience.

Amazon has invested $16.7 billion (approximately 2.54 trillion yen) over the past seven years to assist its drivers in its DSP program, which began in 2018. It was reported in November 2024 that the company is developing smart glasses specifically for delivery drivers. However, at this stage, it was said that 'there are a lot of issues to be resolved and it is not something that can be completed immediately.'

Amazon says the smart glasses will automatically activate when the driver parks at the delivery location.

It then helps identify the package in the car and then uses Amazon's proprietary geospatial technology to provide turn-by-turn walking directions to the customer's door, safely and accurately navigating complex locations, especially apartment buildings and office buildings.

In addition, it is said that you can complete everything from scanning the package to taking a photo of the delivery proof without having to check your smartphone.

The smart glasses are available with prescription lenses or photochromic lenses that darken depending on the light, and are connected to a small controller attached to the delivery vest that includes buttons for operation, a replaceable battery for all-day use, and a dedicated button to call in case of an emergency.

Hundreds of drivers working for delivery service partners (DSPs) tested early versions of the system and provided feedback. One driver who tested it said, 'I feel safer because I don't have to look at my phone and can always focus on the road ahead.'

The delivery driver smart glasses are currently being tested in the US and Canada, and further refinements will be made before they are fully rolled out. Future features include AI-powered error detection, which will provide real-time warnings for deliveries to incorrect addresses, and automatic detection of hazards like pets in yards or dark areas.
