Apple to drastically cut production due to 'near-zero' demand for iPhone Air

The ultra-thin

iPhone Air , released by Apple in September 2025, is a smartphone that has been carefully designed not only for its appearance but also for its internal components, including clever component placement to achieve the thinnest iPhone ever. As the thinnest iPhone ever, the iPhone Air has a striking visual impact, but reports have revealed that Apple plans to significantly reduce production due to almost zero demand.

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Apple is planning to significantly reduce production volumes due to sluggish sales of the iPhone Air. According to Nikkei Asia's interviews with multiple sources, Apple is expected to reduce iPhone Air production orders to the point where it will be considered 'end of production.' A supply chain manager who provided information to Nikkei Asia testified that production orders starting in November 2025 will be 'less than 10% of September levels.'

Because Apple scheduled the iPhone Air's release date in China for October 22, the report of near-zero demand for the iPhone Air likely suggests a market outside of China, according to business magazine Fortune. According to a survey by market research firm KeyBanc Capital Markets, demand for the iPhone Air is virtually zero, and demand for foldable models is also limited. While KeyBanc Capital Markets' survey was conducted for investors, it also revealed that demand for the iPhone 17 series, which was released on the same day as the iPhone Air, remains healthy, with 'a continued shift to the Pro/Pro Max models.'

KeyBanc Capital Markets also noted that despite numerous mentions of AI in Apple's latest events and marketing materials, 'AI features have yet to significantly impact consumer purchasing decisions.'

The iPhone Air, released in September 2025, is just 5.6mm thick, thinner than a pencil. Despite its titanium frame, Fortune noted that 'it's incredibly light.' In fact, since the iPhone 12 mini was released in 2020, no iPhone has been as light as the iPhone Air. However, to achieve this slimness, the iPhone Air sacrifices some features, including a single main camera and shorter battery life than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. Apple has released a dedicated

MagSafe battery to compensate for the iPhone Air's short battery life.

One indicator of weak demand is that the iPhone Air has remained available for immediate shipping in all colors on Apple's official website since its launch, while the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro are listed as having a shipping delay of two to three weeks.

Fortune noted that the iPhone Air's struggles 'are very similar to those of Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge, which reportedly halted production plans after only 1.31 million units were sold as of August.' During the same period, Samsung sold 8.28 million Galaxy S25s , 5.05 million Galaxy S25 Pluss, and 12.18 million Galaxy S25 Ultras. In response, Samsung has reportedly halted development of the Galaxy S26 Edge, the successor to the Galaxy S25 Edge.

The iPhone Air is also available on Amazon.co.jp, with prices including tax of 159,800 yen for the 256GB model, 194,800 yen for the 512GB model, and 229,800 yen for the 1TB model.
