Microsoft has announced new icons for apps such as Word and Excel included in Microsoft 365. Many of these apps have been updated for the first time in seven years since 2018.

The new icons are designed with the themes of 'simple and pleasant,' 'fluid shapes,' 'rich and vibrant colors,' and 'instant recognition.' The new icons will be available to individuals and organizations across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and the web app versions of Microsoft 365 Copilot, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Designer, Clipchamp, OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, Forms, Access, and Defender in the coming weeks.

In the end, in light of the high asset value of the brand, the proposal to retain the letter 'W' but give it a modern twist was adopted.

The final icon chosen was a circle with a 'P' in it.
According to Microsoft, the design of the new icon was inspired by the Copilot icon. 'This small but significant design change symbolizes how AI is changing the nature of design and product development. The icon also embodies a spirit rooted in connection, consistency, and seamless collaboration. While these principles guided our previous redesign, their meaning has changed today. Today, connection is not about visual consistency, but about the seamless flow of human intent across the entire Microsoft 365 canvas,' the company said.
