According to reports, during the opening ceremony of the WikiConference North America 2025 conference, which began at 9 a.m. local time, 27-year-old Connor Weston stormed onto the stage, put a gun to his head, and shouted, 'I'm a non-contact pedophile. I want to kill myself.'
The man was wearing a flag around his neck that read 'No Contact, Non-Criminal Pedophile,' and the flag's colors resembled those used by People With Sexual Orientation towardMinors (MAPs), a group that defines 'people who have a sexual interest in children but have never had sexual contact with a child or accessed illegal child sexual exploitation material.'
Weston is said to have protested against Wikipedia's anti-pedophile policy, which states that Wikipedia's child protection policy does not tolerate inappropriate adult-child relationships and that 'editors who self-identify as pedophiles will be blocked and
Weston was listed as a participant at the conference, but organizers did not share information about whether he had any ties to Wikipedia.
According to reports, Weston previously posted on social media that he was 'fundamentally opposed to relationships between adults and minors because I know they are harmful. I have no 'urges' that I need to suppress, just as most heterosexual men are not driven by the urge to rape every woman they meet. Pedophilia is not a choice. However, while you can choose not to hurt minors, you cannot choose to stop feeling attracted to them.'
Weston attempted suicide, but was subdued by Wikipedia contributors Richard Knipel and Andrew Lee, who ran onto the stage. No shots were fired and no one was injured.
On the day of the incident, all remaining programs were canceled, but resumed the following day with increased security.
