The Machi★Asobi event in Tokushima features many booths related to anime and games, including booths where you can try out pre-release games. At

Machi★Asobi Vol. 29 , I came across a booth where you could try out PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny , a 2D pixel art action game that combines anime with the action game. It looked interesting, so I gave it a try.

I found a demo booth for PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny at the Poppo-gai Shopping Arcade.

The poster looks like this: PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny is a 2D action game where you control Haruka Ran, a high school girl who runs while holding a loaf of bread in her mouth. The game is divided into a game part and an animation part, and the game part is depicted with hand-drawn pixel art.

PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny will be the first release from the anime x game brand 'AniBit,' which is based on the concept of 'getting a taste of anime.'

A tablet device was placed in front of the booth, and the music video was playing continuously.

There were two laptops in the booth. PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny is a PC game that will be sold on Steam.

It was possible to operate it with an Xbox controller.

The only buttons you need to press during gameplay are the right button on the directional pad and the A button. Haruka Ran runs automatically through forced side-scrolling stages, and players must avoid obstacles by dashing with the right button or jumping with the A button.

When you start the game, a voice-over animation will play first, followed by the 2D action game.

The anime follows the usual story of the main character running off with a loaf of bread in his mouth, screaming, 'Oh no! I'm late! I'm late!' You can get a good idea of how the anime connects to the game by watching the video below.

The controls are simple, so I was able to get used to the game quickly.

Another point is that the quality of the hand-drawn pixel art is very high.

You will clear obstacles by using dashes, jumps, and double jumps.

I also took a video of the gameplay. There are no HP or life gauges, and if you hit an obstacle it's game over. However, you can instantly retry, so the stress is kept to a minimum.

Obstacles are not only fixed and placed on the stage, but also types that appear suddenly, such as 'workers coming out of manholes.'

Sometimes a dog will come running from off-screen.

A basketball falls from above. While there are many elements that can be difficult to master on your first try, the locations of each obstacle are fixed, so all you need to do is memorize which obstacles appear at what times and deal with them accordingly. Even if you lose, you can immediately retry, and the controls and background music are refreshing, so I was able to enjoy the perfect balance of frustration at hitting a difficult obstacle on your first try and the sense of accomplishment of learning the obstacles' locations and skillfully dealing with them.

Despite getting game over many times, I tried again and again, and managed to reach the goal within the 5-minute time limit. According to the person in charge, only about 10% of the players at the demo booth were able to reach the goal within the time limit. It's a challenging game that's sure to satisfy.

After you reach the goal, your score will be displayed, so you can enjoy aiming for a high score. In the retail version, an animation will be played after you reach the goal, and you can then challenge the next stage.

After the trial, I received a sticker.

PIXEL DASH: Toast of Destiny is currently in development and the release date has not yet been determined. There is already a sales page on Steam, so please add it to your wishlist.
