Machi Asobi Farm will be holding a 'Sudachi Grab and Sell' event to celebrate its bumper harvest of 300kg of sudachi.

One of the features of Machi★Asobi is that it incorporates a variety of unique events, not just live performances and talks on stage, or screening events at the cinema. At

Machi★Asobi Vol.29 , a grab-and-go event was held to celebrate the bumper crop of sudachi citrus grown at Machi★Asobi Farm (Nakamura Sudachimura).

One of the stages, near Shinmachibashi Higashi Park, was a parasol pool with baskets and sudachi citrus fruits. Attached to the baskets was a message that read, 'Your handful will help support the NPO's activities and the future of the sudachi fields!'

Machi★Asobi's relationship with the farm began in 2017. A sudachi tree-planting tour was held with Tokushima Anime Ambassador Eriko Nakamura, and a commemorative tree was planted at a sudachi farm in Kamiyama Town. At Machi★Asobi Vol. 25, held in 2022, 'Sudachikuwa,' made using sudachi harvested at the farm, was featured as a target item in the gourmet hunt.

The following year, in 2023, Nakamura returned to the farm and helped with the harvest himself. The sudachi citrus harvested this time was used in Machi Aso Beer.

Twelve volunteers will harvest the sudachi in 2025. Initially, there were concerns that the lower parts of the citrus fruits would be eaten by deer, and that there wouldn't be many to harvest, but the citrus fruits grew well in the abundant sunlight and eventually weighed an astounding 300 kg.

With this background, the afternoon session of the sudachi catching event started with the first throw (?) by Nakamura Eriko.

Nakamura said that his hands smelled nice after grabbing so many sudachi.

We also had the opportunity to hear from Master Sudachi about how to cut sudachi. While it's tempting to just cut vertically at the stem, the correct way is to cut it horizontally to create round slices.

When playing the game, you first roll the dice, and then you can grab as many balls as you roll. However, if you roll a low number, Master Sudachi will sometimes allow you to retry.

One man who tried it struggled, saying, 'It's surprisingly hard to grab.' If you use too much force, the round sudachi will spin around and roll away, so it's best to wrap your fingers around it to grab it.

It seemed like I could get an average of five per handful.

The Grab Challenge was a paid event where participants paid a voluntary donation to support the activities of the nonprofit organization Machi★Asobi and the operation of the farm where the sudachi are grown. The donations received this time may lead to the development of new sudachi products in future events.
