◆New features of Pixel 10 Pro Fold
I searched for the 'new features' of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and found that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's introduction page listed a new feature called 'Instant View,' which allows you to instantly preview photos you've just taken.

You can access it by opening the Camera app with your phone open and tapping the Instant View icon.

Like this, all the photos you've taken so far are lined up on the left screen, and you can swipe to go back in time.

◆Multitasking
Another feature introduced on the same page was 'multitasking using split screen.' While existing smartphones allow for split screen, which allows two apps to be displayed vertically, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold's unique feature as a foldable smartphone is that it allows apps to be displayed side-by-side.

Let's try it out. With the default screen operation mode 'Gesture Navigation' enabled, slowly swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the task screen.

The running apps will be listed like this.

Tap the arrow next to the app you want to view and tap 'Split Screen.'

Then tap another app.

Now you have two apps side by side.

You can freely fix the screen width by swiping horizontally on the white vertical line.

Not only can you use two apps on two screens, but you can also instantly open a map link you checked on one screen in Google Maps, or transfer files from one screen to the other.

I thought I could use it to play games on one screen and watch YouTube on the other, so I tried it, but when I used an app other than YouTube in split screen mode, it seemed to detect YouTube as being in the background, so with YouTube's free plan, background playback was not possible and playback was paused.

You can save the app pairings you made when splitting your devices. Open the task screen, tap the arrow, and then tap 'Pair apps...'.

A shortcut has been added to the home screen to quickly open the combination.

◆Camera functions
When comparing smartphones on the Google Store, you'll notice that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold offers camera features not found in other Pixel 10 models.

- Dual screen preview
This feature allows the subject to see themselves when recording video by displaying the same image on both the inner and outer displays.

First, open the Camera app, switch to video mode, tap the 'Foldable Device Features' icon, and then tap 'Dual-Screen Preview.'

A notification appeared saying 'The camera is displaying content on two screens.'

In this state, the subject will be displayed normally on the inner display.

The subject is also displayed on the outer display, allowing the subject to see their own facial expressions and poses.

・Rear camera selfie
The rear camera selfie feature, as the name suggests, allows you to take selfies with the rear camera. While the front camera is a single 10-megapixel camera, the rear camera has a triple camera configuration consisting of a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 10.5-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera, so you can take selfies with overwhelmingly high image quality.

To use it, switch to Photos, tap 'Foldable Features,' and then tap 'Rear Camera Selfie.'

The internal display will show the message 'Front screen is turned on' and operation will be locked.

The outer display will now show the image captured by the rear camera, allowing you to take selfies.

- Hands-free shooting in tabletop mode
Google calls the state where the smartphone body is folded into an L-shape 'Tabletop Mode.' This function allows you to take photos in this state.

First, switch to tabletop mode.

The screen display will change, with the subject appearing in the upper half and the control panel in the lower half, and a countdown timer will automatically appear.

This is what it looks like when you actually take a picture.

You can also switch to the front camera and take group photos. If your face and palm are visible, you can start the timer by simply raising your hand.

・Look at me
'Look at Me' is a feature that encourages children, pets, and others to look at your smartphone. To activate it, tap 'Look at Me' under 'Foldable Device Features.'

Select the animation that appears.

An animation appears on the outer display, and sounds and movements draw in those around you. If the subject smiles, the animation changes, allowing the photographer to capture a good smile by pressing the shutter button at the right time.

◆ Impressions after using it
Being a foldable smartphone that makes effective use of two screens, it feels like using a tablet. For example, in the Gmail app, you can display an email thread on the left screen and view emails on the right screen.

With Google Calendar, you can tap a date on the monthly calendar displayed on the left screen and then add an event to the right screen. This is a nice little feature, as the monthly calendar can be difficult to see on a single screen.

The Settings app can use both the left and right screens.

Chrome will be displayed on one screen.

Split screen allows you to open Chrome on both the left and right sides and view different pages. This is a great feature for people who usually have two smartphones and need to look at different screens at the same time.

X (formerly Twitter) will be displayed large on one screen.

YouTube will be displayed on a single screen and designed for tablets.

The split-screen multitasking feature is convenient, so people who normally own two smartphones could combine them into one, but the high price of ¥267,500 (tax included) is a drawback. The flexible camera functionality is also appealing, but at the time of writing, the capabilities are limited, and all of the features are simple and unimaginative. Compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which was released in 2024, the battery capacity and processor have been improved, so if you've been holding off on the previous model but are now looking to buy a genuine Google foldable smartphone, this might be the time to buy one.
