Google develops cell analysis AI 'C2S-Scale 27B' to help with cancer treatment



A collaborative research project between Google and Yale University has developed an AI model called Cell2Sentence-Scale 27B (C2S-Scale 27B), which is capable of detailed

analysis of single cells. C2S-Scale 27B is expected to be useful in research and development of immunotherapy and other fields, and research into its application in cancer immunotherapy has already begun.

C2S-Scale 27B is a 27 billion parameter model developed based on Gemma . The technology itself was announced in April 2025, revealing that it can perform predictive and generative tasks related to cells and biology in a manner similar to having a conversation with a chat AI.



In the world of large-scale language models, a scaling law has been proposed that states that the larger the model, the better its performance. Since it was demonstrated that this scaling law also applies to C2S-Scale at the time of the research publication in April 2025, the research team developed a relatively large model with 27 billion parameters, and with this publication has made it publicly available.



To validate the utility of C2S-Scale 27B, the research team conducted an experiment to identify drugs that enhance immune signaling only in the presence of low doses of interferon to detect cancer cells. C2S-Scale 27B simulated the effects of over 4,000 drugs and predicted that a drug called silmitasertib (CX-4945) would be effective. The research team's laboratory testing of silmitasertib demonstrated the expected effect: it exhibited no antigen presentation ability in the absence of interferon, but exhibited significant synergistic amplification of antigen presentation in the presence of low doses of interferon.

The research team plans to continue exploring these findings and also test the effectiveness of AI in other immunological settings.
