Apple's smart glasses will run on a Mac with full visionOS and a lighter UI when connected to an iPhone, and the M5-equipped iPad Pro and new Apple Vision Pro may be announced in October 2025.

Bloomberg's Gurman, a reporter with an unusually deep knowledge of Apple-related information, reports that Apple's smart glasses will have two modes: when connected to a Mac, they will run the full visionOS operating system found in the Apple Vision Pro, and when connected to an iPhone, they will run a lighter version. Gurman also reports that Apple will announce an iPad Pro with an M5 and a new Apple Vision Pro sometime in 2025.

Apple is making a strategic shift by scaling back plans to develop a cheaper version of its pricey mixed reality (MR) headset, the Apple Vision Pro, and instead focusing on developing smart glasses.
Apple prioritizes development of new smart glasses over lightweight Apple Vision Pro - GIGAZINE

The high price and weight of the Apple Vision Pro, coupled with a lack of apps, make it difficult for many consumers to find it appealing. Meanwhile, Meta's Ray-Ban Displays offer hands-free functionality, allowing users to check messages, make calls, and take photos and videos. Garman points out that Apple's shift in direction is consistent with the industry's overall shift toward always-connected, AI-enabled devices.
However, development of the Apple Vision Pro has only been scaled back, not completely terminated. Apple is preparing an Apple Vision Pro with a faster chip and is considering releasing a redesigned model in the future priced above $3,000 (approximately 452,000 yen). Ultimately, Apple may offer products at multiple price points, from affordable smart glasses without a display, to models with a display, full-fledged AR glasses, and the top-of-the-line Apple Vision Pro.
Garman also reports that Apple's smart glasses will be able to run the full version of visionOS when paired with a Mac, but will be able to switch to a lighter, more mobile-friendly UI when linked to an iPhone, meaning development of the visionOS that's included in Apple Vision Pro won't go to waste.
'The biggest question is whether Apple can ultimately master the AI-driven features. With so much at stake, Apple has no choice but to rise to the challenge,' Gurman said. Given that Meta's smart glasses already boast superior AI capabilities, Apple must overcome two key obstacles: AI performance and price.
Gurman also reported that Apple's annual product launch event, usually held in October, will be held in 2025, where it will unveil an iPad Pro with the M5 chip and the Apple Vision Pro, which will be equipped with the faster chip mentioned above. According to Macrumors, an Apple-related news site, the message 'Buy an Apple iPad: iPad Pro M5, pre-orders opening soon' appeared in Google search results on the AT&T website.

He also said that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros equipped with the M5 Pro and M5 Max are scheduled to be released, but due to the lack of mass production, they will likely be released a little later in early 2026. He also predicted that the AirTag, new HomePod mini models, the next-generation iPad Air and iPad, and the iPhone 17e, a budget version of the iPhone 17 series, will also be released in early 2026.
