Audacity , the free, open-source audio editing software, has announced plans to release Audacity 4 in early 2026, a major update to the Audacity 3 series that has been running since 2021. It has also been revealed that the Audacity logo will be redesigned to coincide with the update.

Martin Keeley, vice president of product at Muse, the company behind Audacity, provides a detailed explanation of the research and design that went into the gradual evolution of Audacity from 3 to 4 on his YouTube channel.

According to Keeley, when Audacity started the project in 1999, the goal was to create a simple app that could be used immediately after opening it. However, over the past 20 years, updates and changes in demand for audio editing software have led to a complex software design. Therefore, the Audacity development team conducted a long-term survey to determine what most people use Audacity for.

The survey found that 70% of Audacity users use it for simple audio editing tasks such as quick recording, format conversion, and quick editing. 60% use it for music-related tasks such as recording music and digitizing records. 30% use it for production tasks such as mixing, mastering, and finishing with effects. 20-25% use it for text-to-speech and podcasts. 5% use it for academic purposes such as data analysis.

The analysis revealed that Audacity played a vital role in audio production, not just audio editing, and that there were numerous requests for music features, such as support for more instruments, Keeley said.

Based on the survey, user feedback, and the development team, Keeley outlined the following goals for the incremental evolution of Audacity 3: First, building many new features for audio editors and producers. Second, improving overall performance by removing '

technical debt ' (issues left unaddressed just to get things working). Third, switching to Qt as the GUI framework. Fourth, making Audacity visually appealing and easy to use. Fifth, laying the foundation for future advanced music features. Sixth, resolving latency issues.

Audacity 4 is planned to receive various updates, but it has also been announced that it will be redesigned not only for its functionality but also for its brand image. Below is the previous Audacity logo, which has undergone minor changes but has not undergone major changes. Keeley points out that 'the logo is iconic, but most people would consider it outdated.'

The new Audacity logo that Keely released in the movie is below. According to Keely, the Audacity rebranding itself was completed in 2024.

Muse has completely revamped the logo image of its apps, and Audacity has followed suit.

'I'm sure the most talked-about topic of this Audacity 4 announcement will be the new brand logo,' said Keeley. 'Sometimes simplified changes to a brand logo can feel lifeless or clunky, so I'm interested to hear what you all think about this redesign.'

When the topic ' What do you think of the new Audacity logo? ' was raised on Reddit, many people criticized it, saying things like, 'The original logo was immediately obvious that it was headphones and had something to do with sound, but the new one is a bad design that you can't tell what it is unless you're told in advance that it's headphones,' 'It's too generic and has no personality, I don't like it,' and 'It looks like sperm in the middle of eating a watermelon.'
