Periodic Labs is a startup founded by Ekin Dogas Kubac and Liam Feddas.
Kubach, who previously worked at Google Brain and Google DeepMind, led the materials science team and discovered 2.2 million new crystal structures using an AI tool called GNoME.

Fedas, former Vice President of Research at OpenAI, is one of the researchers involved in the development of ChatGPT, which also includes more than 20 other researchers from Google DeepMind, Meta, and other companies.
Periodic Labs' goal is to 'automate scientific discovery.' It aims to create 'AI scientists' by using AI to discover new materials and physically conducting experiments with robots.
The first goal is to invent new superconductors that perform better than existing superconducting materials and, if possible, require less energy to operate.
Another goal is to collect all the data from the physical world that AI scientists generate as they mix, heat, and manipulate different elements and raw materials in search of new discoveries.
Periodic Labs says, 'Until now, scientific AI advances have come from models trained on data from the internet. However, despite its vastness, data is finite, and in recent years, cutting-edge AI models have completely run out of data. Ultimately, we need to test and verify our hypotheses. Our autonomous laboratory, which is at the core of our strategy, can provide us with vast amounts of high-quality data that cannot be obtained anywhere else.'
Periodic Labs is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, DST, NVIDIA, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Amazon co-founder Jeff Bezos, among others, and is expected to not only invent next-generation materials but also generate the data needed to continue evolving AI models.
