Introducing 'URL Snake,' a snake game that can be played in the browser's address bar

URL Snake is a classic

snake game that can be played in the address bar of your web browser.

In URL Snake, the area between 'snake#|' and '|[score:0]' in the address bar (framed in red) is the game screen. The four dots in a row represent the snake you control, and can be controlled with the WASD keys or arrow keys. To earn a single dot, you simply collect it, and the number of dots you collect during play is displayed at the end of the message.

So, when you actually play it, it looks like this: It may be hard to understand just by reading the words 'Snake game played in the browser's address bar,' but when you see it actually working in the address bar, it really is 'Snake game played in the browser's address bar.'

You can see how the score steadily increases in the video below. The play area is very small because the game screen is the address bar part, and yet as you earn points, Snake's body becomes longer and harder to control, making it more difficult than you might imagine.

The author of URL Snake is programmer Demian Ferreiro , and the source code can be found below.

When URL Snake became a hot topic on the social message board Hacker News , Ferreiro appeared on the platform , revealing that he had been wondering about how Braille works, which led him to create URL Snake. He also revealed that the snake gets bigger and more glitchy as you progress through the game, so he was looking for a way to fix this . He also mentioned that he had previously tried to render DOOM as a favicon , and that URL Snake had worked fine on mobile browsers in the past .
