The terrifying FartScrollLid app plays fart sounds when you open or close your MacBook

Starting with the 16-inch MacBook Pro released in 2019, Apple's MacBooks have been equipped with

a sensor that detects the angle of the hinge that opens and closes the display. Taking advantage of the ability to detect the opening and closing angle of the display on a PC, an app called ' FartScrollLid ' has been released on GitHub that plays 'fart sounds' based on the opening and closing angle and speed.

Engineer Sam Henry Gold reported in September 2025 that he discovered a sensor in MacBooks that detects the opening and closing angle of the display. According to Gold, although the sensor is not publicly available as an API, he was able to confirm that it was included in the 16-inch MacBook Pro released in 2019, and he also discovered a way to read the sensor data.

The software can read the sensor data, which detects the display's opening and closing angle, and display the angle on the screen. Gold developed an application that not only displays the angle on the screen, but also makes a 'creaking' sound, similar to that of an old door, when the display is opened or closed.

Software developer Ian Nuttall was inspired by Gold's discovery and development and created the MacBook app 'FartScrollLid,' which is available on GitHub .

Below is a video of opening and closing a MacBook with FartScrollLid running. When you move the display, you hear a dirty fart noise. If you move slowly, you hear a relatively quiet fart, but if you open and close the display quickly, you hear a loud fart noise.

When you launch FartScrollLid, the window at the top right of the screen displays the display's opening and closing angle, along with other fart parameters such as the angle, opening and closing speed, and 'maximum output' and 'gas leakage.'

'This app should be used for entertainment purposes only. Use responsibly and in appropriate settings. We do not recommend it for business meetings, dates, libraries, etc.,' Nuttall said.
