It is pointed out that Amazon Echo is using several GB of data per day even though it is not being used

Owners of Amazon's smart speaker, the Echo, have reported that their devices are using excessive data even when they're barely being used.

Amazon Echo is reportedly an internet vampire that uses gigabytes of data per day despite being unused, says owner | Tom's Hardware

Dave Plummer, a former Microsoft developer of the Windows Task Manager, reported that two

Amazon Echo Show devices he 'never used' used over 4GB of data in a 24-hour period.

According to the information shared by Plummer, one of the Echo Shows appears to have used 2.67GB of data in one day, while the other used 1.36GB, leaving Plummer wondering what the purpose of the data transfers was.

X (formerly Twitter) users were buzzing with claims that Echo was listening to their conversations, but Plummer remained calm, saying, 'It's either a bug, or both devices had a major update that day, or they had cached video content. Echo Show supports video, so it could be downloading movie trailers. But I can assure you it's not spying.'

One comment on Plummer's post speculated that when a smart speaker hears a command like 'Alexa,' it records the surrounding sounds and sends them to a server for processing. This means that even if you're not calling the device, if it detects a similar sound, it may send the information for analysis and recording, potentially consuming data.

The reason for the above criticism is that Amazon has previously been reported to be listening to recordings of customers' voices obtained through Alexa.
