In the early morning hours of August 2, 2025, 16-year-old Lindsay Leskovac was driving home with a friend when she suddenly fell asleep at the wheel. The pickup truck she was driving struck two poles and several trees before coming to a halt near a body of water. Lindsay was trapped inside the truck and unable to call for help. However, she was able to successfully call emergency services using her iPhone's crash detection feature, and was eventually rescued by paramedics.

Lindsay suffered serious injuries in the accident, including fractures to her pelvis, hip joints, and cervical vertebrae, but survived.

'We learned from the fire and rescue personnel that the call to 911 came from a cell phone,' Lindsay's mother, Laura Leskovac, said in an interview with WFMJ-TV, an NBC and CW affiliate in Youngstown, Ohio. 'We then dug deeper to find out exactly who made the call and how. We discovered that iPhones have a feature that can detect collisions if you turn it on,' she said, revealing that the call was made possible thanks to the feature.

Laura added, 'Lindsay must have heard the operator calling out to her. She was on the phone for 22 minutes. Thanks to this technology, rescuers were able to find her.' She added that while her daughter was in a daze, the crash detection feature was able to contact emergency services, and she regained consciousness while on the phone with the operator.

To use the Collision Detection feature on your iPhone, you need to enable 'Notify after a severe collision' in the 'Emergency SOS' section of the 'Settings' app. Collision Detection is available on iPhone 14 and later running iOS 16 or later, and Apple Watch Series 8 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra and later running watchOS 9 or later.
