Here's what President Trump posted on Truth Social:

'As President of the United States, I will stand up to countries that attack America's great technology companies. Digital taxes, digital services laws, and digital market regulations are all designed to harm and discriminate against American technology, and most outrageously, these regulations enable China's tech giants. This must end now! I arm myself with this truth to warn all countries with digital powers, digital services laws, and digital market regulations that, unless these discriminatory measures are eliminated, as President of the United States, I will impose significant tariffs on their exports to the United States and implement export restrictions on highly protected technologies and chips. America and our technology companies can no longer be the world's 'piggy bank' or 'doormat.' If you disrespect America and our great technology companies, consider the consequences! Thank you for your attention to this issue.'

President Trump has long been pressuring America's trading partners to repeal digital taxes, which are typically structured to apply only to the world's largest and most established tech companies, like Meta, and which 'dozens of countries have already implemented,' CNBC reports.

In June 2025, President Trump declared that he would terminate all trade negotiations with Canada over the Digital Services Tax, which prompted Canada to repeal the tax .

Digital taxes like Canada's digital services tax have drawn bipartisan criticism in the United States because most of the major technology companies subject to the tax are based in the United States. Criticism of digital taxes did not begin with President Trump's inauguration. In 2023, the chairman and ranking member of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee criticized Canada's digital services tax, saying it 'arbitrarily discriminated against innovative American companies.'

The digital tax is imposed on large companies like Amazon, who operate in their own countries while earning huge profits from the public without paying much or any tax to the countries or regions where they operate.
