Repairing Sony's top-of-the-line CRT TV, the Trinitron KV-3000R, and bringing it back to life

The KV-3000R was a top-of-the-line model in Sony's

Trinitron CRT television brand, produced in a limited run of 1,000 units. American AV equipment collector Matt Parker reported on his YouTube channel that he had acquired and repaired a rare KV-3000R.

The KV-3000R that Mr. Parker acquired. At first glance, it just looks like a high-end shelf.

Take out the remote and press a button.

Then the door will open automatically.

CRT televisions appeared, with a screen size of 30 inches diagonally.

This is a page from a 1981 Christmas catalog featuring the KV-3000R. The price was $10,000, which was equivalent to about 1.2 million yen at the exchange rate in 1981. The average starting salary for a college graduate at the time was about 120,000 yen.

All shelves are made from ash plywood harvested in Hokkaido.

The KV-3000R was a limited edition model produced in 1,000 units, each with a unique serial number. The model Parker obtained, number 458, is known to have been owned by a Sony vice president of sales. Of the 1,000, 12 were destroyed in a fire at a retail store.

Typically, the logo on Sony products is silver, but the Sony logo on the KV-3000R is gold.

Speaker grills on either side of the TV.

Hidden between the right speaker and the TV is a control panel that allows you to adjust the channel memory and picture quality.

Additionally, underneath the shelf, in a place that is normally barely visible, is the main power switch.

Two instruction manuals.

The instructions were the same, but they were different editions. One had corrections made with tape, but the other had been corrected at the time of printing.

Circuit Diagram

Apparently, this information was copied from the Sony catalog of the time for the KV-3000R.

The unit comes with two sets of remote controls. However, Parker's KV-3000R apparently came with two sets of remote controls for some reason.

This is a plywood sheet for repairing shelves. Although the wood grain is the same, the color is different, so if you actually use it, you will need to apply varnish or paint to make the color closer to the original.

Shelf included with the KV-3000R.

Parker has stored his newly repaired

Betamax player, tapes, remote control and instruction manual.

The back looks like this, with easy access to the circuit board and components.

The circuit board has circuit diagrams and component names written on it.

In addition, a sheet with the names of each board and component is attached to the inside of the shelf.

The back of the CRT.

The CRT is placed on a roller base and can be pulled out by pulling firmly.

The entire design is easy to repair.

Parker ordered a large number of parts to repair the KV-3000R.

He said he gathered the necessary parts according to the model numbers written on the circuit diagram.

There are burnt and damaged areas on the circuit board.

Repaired with copper tape.

While repairing, we turn on the power, check, and replace diodes, resistors, capacitors, etc.

After the repair was completed, we immediately played back the Betamax on the KV-3000R. The images shot on the camera looked a little washed out, but in reality, the colors were much more vibrant.

The KV-3000R is a very rare TV, and in the past it has even been chosen as a prize on a quiz show.

Parker said he would like to find out what the serial number of the prize K-3000R was and track it down.
