Amazon is expanding its grocery business by introducing thousands of fresh food items to its same-day delivery service. As of 2024, Amazon's grocery and household staples sales in the United States are expected to exceed $100 billion (approximately ¥14.7 trillion), with over 150 million users. As of the time of writing, Amazon offers same-day delivery in over 1,000 cities in the United States, and the company has announced that it plans to expand this to over 2,300 cities by the end of 2025.

Amazon's same-day delivery service allows customers to order thousands of fresh groceries, including produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods, along with household goods, appliances, and other products already available for same-day delivery on Amazon.com.

Amazon is always looking for ways to make grocery shopping simpler, faster and more affordable for its customers, especially Amazon Prime members, and hopes expanding same-day fresh food delivery to more areas will make grocery shopping even faster and easier.

Amazon's same-day delivery service is designed to complement Amazon's existing grocery delivery services, including Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and various grocery and specialty stores on Amazon.com.

To ensure customers can shop for fresh produce online with confidence, Amazon has built a dedicated temperature-controlled fulfillment network, equipped to deliver fresh, high-quality fresh produce. All products undergo a six-point quality check upon arrival and before delivery, and temperature-sensitive items are delivered in insulated bags that can be recycled through the curbside recycling program, the same bags used for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market deliveries.

Amazon began testing a same-day grocery delivery service in Phoenix, USA, in 2014. In early 2025, the company launched the service in Orlando, Florida, and Kansas City, Missouri. Many of these customers were first-time grocery shoppers, and Amazon noted that those who used the same-day delivery service were twice as likely to return to Amazon compared to those who did not purchase groceries. The top 10 best-selling fresh produce items for same-day delivery include strawberries, bananas, Honeycrisp , limes, and avocados.

Jason Goldberg, chief commerce strategy officer at marketing and communications firm Publicis Groupe, said Amazon has struggled to succeed in the fresh food category, and that when customers order shelf-stable and fresh foods at the same time, the items appear in multiple online shopping carts, including Amazon Fresh, creating confusion for shoppers. However, Goldberg said the expansion of same-day delivery 'will certainly improve Amazon's competitive position in the fresh food category.'

Amazon plans to expand its same-day grocery delivery service to more areas by 2026.
