The new Wi-Fi-only setup feature in Matter 1.4.2 eliminates the need for Bluetooth chips in smart home devices, reducing costs for manufacturers. According to the technical director of the Connectivity Standard Alliance, which develops Matter, this could reduce the price of smart home devices by around $1.
Existing Wi-Fi-only smart home devices can take advantage of Matter 1.4.2 with just a firmware update.
For users, the advantage is that they no longer have to turn on Bluetooth every time.

Matter 1.4.2 also includes several other changes, including security enhancements.
For users, there are tangible benefits such as the ability to control devices across an entire room with a single command, added support for things like gradually turning off lights, a reduction in the number of commands needed to manage multiple devices, and expected improvements in responsiveness and performance.
Communication between devices has also been improved, meaning devices connect to the network less frequently, extending device battery life.
The method for identifying the values assigned to each device has also been improved, reducing the number of confusing names displayed on the smart home management screen and improving the user experience.

We've also improved the behavioral confusion seen with robot vacuums. Some robot vacuums require you to cancel the current task before instructing them to perform a new task, which can lead to situations where a robot vacuum on its way back to its station doesn't respond to a new cleaning command. Matter 1.4.2 adds a more flexible approach, allowing you to cancel an existing task and perform a new action.
Matter 1.5 is scheduled for release in the fall of 2025.
