We arrived at Ibaraki Elementary School. The school is located on the site of Ibaraki Castle , which is said to have been built by Kusunoki Masashige, so the main gate looks like a castle gate and has a history of 152 years.

Apparently, lanterns for the Hometown Festival are being made in a room at Ibaraki Elementary School.

In the corner of the room, there was a rental umbrella, as it is a room in an elementary school. It is usually used for PTA meetings and as a storage area for materials.

Hanging inside the room were lanterns bearing the names of the sponsors.

And this is the lantern folded up.

When unfolded, it is a vertical lantern, about 50cm tall, with a red and white firebox.

This is what the inside looks like. It is designed to hold candles, but for the festival, they plan to put a light bulb inside to light it up.

Paint and brushes for writing the names of supporters. According to the staff who write the letters on the lanterns, if the paint is too thick the letters won't flow well, and if it's too thin the paint will run, so they have to be very careful about diluting it.

The lantern's firebox is accordion-shaped, making it difficult to write with, so first secure the lantern to a chair with a rope.

Pull it out and hold it in your left hand.

The letters written are 'GIGAZINE Gigajin' in both alphabet and katakana.

Dip the brush into the paint.

You can see how the letters are actually written on the lantern in the video below.
This is what it looks like when you finish writing.

Hang it indoors to dry.

This lantern will be hung at the Ibaraki Elementary School playground from 4pm on Sunday, September 14th as part of the Ibaraki District Hometown Festival. If you would like to see the real thing, please come and visit us.
